Lewis Buttery was born in 1995 and is an artist from Leicester, UK. He was a drop-out at the end of 2011 and was introduced to the art world as a self-taught artist a year and a half later, by a local youth arts charity. In 2014 he started running workshops and curating in settings from prisons to museums, to council estates and youth clubs.
While doing that work, Buttery did an Art & Design Foundation course part-time, over two years. Then he moved to London in 2018 to study Fine Art at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London).
In 2020 Buttery put giant words of affirmation in Kings Cross, London, using materials sponsored by ColArt (Liquitex) and CassArt. The phrases "i am happy with who i am" and "i am living a great life", each 12 metres wide, were either side of CSM's main entrance for the duration of the six week show.
